Annie Wilkes is the fictional character and main villain of Stephen king’s novel misery, which was released in 1987 and later adopted in a movie with the same name in 1990.

And Annie is a mentally unstable person, who is a nurse by profession, and had murdered several people before abducting her favorite writer, Paul Sheldon.

Annie held Paul hostage in her house, tortured him psychologically and physically, and forced him to write another manuscript in which her favorite character was not killed off.

Despite various attempts, Paul could not flee, and those who came for his search were also killed. In the end, Paul manages to fool Annie and finally kill her before fleeing from her house.

Annie was suffering from borderline personality disorder and depression, and even though we know that she was wrong and pure evil, she truly believed that what she was doing was right and for love. She had no guilt whatsoever for holding Paul captive and truly believed that she was his number one fan.

One of the scariest moments in the movie is when we see how mentally disturbed Annie is. Just after Annie left her scrapbook out and Paul read it, it was clear that he was in imminent danger, but Annie explained herself, saying that she understood his frustration and it would take him a few days before he could totally accept his new surrounding and so for that, she has to make sure he does not run away.

What makes this scene and the dialogue even more disturbing is that right after this, Annie broke his ankle with a sledgehammer, and as he was shouting, she said to him these lines.

2. “WHAT’S THE MATTER? I’ll tell you, “What’s the matter!” I go out of my way for you! I do everything to try and make you happy. I feed you, I clean you, I dress you, and what thanks do I get? “Oh, you bought the wrong paper, Annie; I can’t write on this paper, Annie!” Well, I’ll get your stupid paper, but you just better start showing me a little appreciation around here, Mr. MAN!”-Annie

To keep Annie calm, Paul decided that he would write a new manuscript to keep her calm. That when this scene happened when Paul noticed that the pages were not of very good quality, and he asked her to bring him new ones.

Annie loses her cool and shouts these lines as he feels that Paul did not appreciate her enough for all that she was doing for him.

3. “I DON’T WANT HER SPIRIT! I WANT HER! AND YOU MURDERED HER!”-Annie

After finding out that Paul killed her favorite character in the book, Annie loses her temper. As Paul was explaining to her that in those times, women would usually die during childbirth and that it was important that her spirit was still alive, Annie bursts into anger, saying that her spirit is not important, and demands that he bring her back to life.

4. “The rain. Sometimes it gives me the blues. When you first came here, I only loved the writer part of Paul Sheldon. Now I know I love the rest of him, too. I know you don’t love me; don’t say you do. You’re beautiful, brilliant, a famous man of the world, and I’m… not a movie star type. You’ll never know the fear of losing someone like you if you’re someone like me.”-Annie

It was well known to the audience by this point that Annie was suffering from depression and personality disorder. It was in one of these scenes that Annie had bouts of depression and hence, says the above lines when Paul asks what is wrong.

5. “Now the time has come. I put two bullets in my gun. One for me and one for you. Oh, darling, it will be so beautiful. “Annie

Annie was mentally unstable, and after Paul’s manuscript began to take off, she would sometimes get these random bouts of depression when she would change completely.

It was one of these times when she said the one line, and it shows how neurotic she was.

6. “I’m your number one fan. There’s nothing to worry about. You’re going to be just fine. I will take good care of you. I’m your number one fan.”-Annie

There is no doubt that Annie was Paul’s fan; she even abducted him. Even though she was completely wrong and dark, she believed that she was doing all the right and just things that were required of her, and she was a good fan.

Hence, she said the above lines, truly believing that Paul is better off with her as she will take great care of him.

After reading the revised version of the book which Annie made Paul write when she discovered that Annie was alive, she felt pure happiness.

When she further asked him if he liked Liberace, he said something which sounded like a lie only to keep her happy and keep her spirits up.

Misery was Annie’s favorite character, as she was very upset when she found out that she was killed off by Paul. Hence, she asked him to make her live again.

8. “It has no nobility.”-Annie

One thing which Annie hated was the use of vulgar language and words; she says that it has no nobility to it.

It was ironic, considering what she was doing, that she found the use of vulgar words profane. It was her first rant and set the mood for her character quite well. When Sheldon tried to explain to her that everyone talked like that, it threw her into a rage, and she shouted the above lines before spilling the soup on the bed.

9. “I just wanted to tell you I’m your number one fan.”-Annie

In one of the earlier scenes in the movie, when Sheldon comes to a restaurant, Annie is there dressed as a waitress. She just made her introduction and told him that she was his number one fan, which he took as a compliment, not aware of the danger that awaited him.

It was a little while after this that Annie abducted him and held him captive.

This scene was after Annie’s death, near the end of the movie, after Paul was rescued.

He thinks of his time with Annie and says that an incident like that is hard to forget and leaves a scar. So, even though he might not think of it all the time but it is bound to come back and haunt him once in a while.

Annie was a big fan of Paul and his work, and she was very happy that she would get to read his manuscript for the new book before the rest of the world.

In her happiness, she said these lines, which made Paul uncomfortable, but he took it as an awkward compliment.

After freaking out, she picks up a plant. And was going to throw it on Paul’s head before deciding not to. She says this dialogue. And this scene was the turning point for her relationship with Paul.

The book remains one of Stephen king’s best-selling novels. And the movie did exceptionally well at the box office. With a different approach to serial killers, AnnieWilkes remains one of the most iconic characters of all time. Being number 17 on the list of most iconic villains ever made.

Kathy bates received a lot of praise for her role as Annie Wilkes. And even received an Oscar for the best actress in a leading role in 1991 for her role in this movie.

With a twist of fun and humor, Annie is a villain to be remembered. She is cold, merciless, and scary. But her belief that she is doing the right thing makes her memorable as a villain.
