The malicious glare that can undo the recipient’s good fortune is known as the evil eye. It is inspired by envy and is meant to bring misfortune and bad luck. It is a belief that when someone achieves success and recognition, they attract envy around them. The manifestation of envy results in a curse, which causes all kinds of misfortune. The origin of the curse of the evil eye dates back to the 6th Century in Greek.
In an ancient Greek romance, the concept of an evil eye is beautifully captured when the author Aethiopica, writes, “When anyone looks at what is excellent with an envious eye he fills the surrounding atmosphere with a pernicious quality, and transmits his own envenomed exhalations into whatever is nearest to him.”
A more scientific explanation was given by another Greek philosopher Plutarch. He explained that the human eye holds power to release invisible rays of energy that were, in some cases, potent enough to kill children or small animals.
