Lies are a sort of dishonesty and manipulation. Giving someone false information is misleading them in order to advance oneself or a situation. There are some lies that are thought to be told without intention; these are known as white lies. These are said to be told with the best of intentions, hoping to make the person being lied to feel good or save their feelings from being damaged. One of the most common bad things that humans do is definitely lying.
Some have claimed that lying is an unavoidable aspect of human nature and that there are occasionally valid reasons for it, but I don’t think it’s ever a good idea, and it can be extremely damaging to the individual lying, the one being lied to, and society as a whole.
1. “It is so funny that you lie to me when I already know the truth. And it’s even funnier that you continue to deny it until I show you the proof that I know you’re lying.” -Unknown
According to this quote, it is amusing to discover that the person in front of me is lying even when I am aware of the truth regarding the matter they are lying about. What is even funnier about this situation is when the person in question continues to deny the truth rather than accept it, as doing so reveals much about them as a person. Lying reveals character, so it is amusing to discover that someone is lying.
2. “I don’t know what’s worse: people who lie or people who think I am stupid enough to believe the lies!”- Unknown
The quotation says, I don’t know which is worse thing, people who tell lies or people who think the other person is foolish enough to fall for the lies. This also means that the person who said it believes lying to be right and also believes the other person is foolish enough to not realize the other person is lying about something, even though in most cases the other person is aware of the lies the other person is speaking.
3. “He who permits himself to tell a lie once, finds it much easier to do it a second and next time, till at length it becomes habitual; he tells lies without attending to it, and truths without the world’s believing. This falsehood of the tongue leads to that of the heart, and in time depraves all the good dispositions.”-Thomas Jefferson
Once someone gives themselves permission to lie, it becomes much simpler for them to lie again and again until it eventually becomes second nature. This person tells lies without thinking about them and says the truth without the world believing him. This heartfelt depravity results from the untruth of the tongue, which eventually corrupts the heart’s otherwise noble motives.
4. “Lies are a little fortress; inside them you can feel safe and powerful. Through your little fortress of lies you try to run your life and manipulate other people. But the fortress needs walls, so you build some. These are the just for your lies. You know that you are doing this to protect someone you love, to keep them from feeling pain. Whatever works, just so you feel okay about the lies.” -Wm. Paul Young
Lies act as a small fortification where you can feel secure and in control. You attempt to control your life and influence others through your small castle of lies. But you build certain walls because the fortress needs them. These serve as your defences for your lies. You feel as though you are acting in their best interests by sparing them from suffering. Whatever works, as long as you’re comfortable with the lies.
5. “ All men must acknowledge Lying to be one of the most scandalous sins, that can be committed between man and man; a crime of a deep dye, and of an extensive nature, leading into innumerable sins; for Lying is practiced to deceive, to injure, betray, rob, destroy, and the like; Lying in this sense is the concealing of all other crimes, the sheep’s clothing upon the wolf’s back, the Pharisee’s prayer, the harlot’s blush, the hypocrite’s paint, and Judas’s kiss; in a word, it is mankind’s darling sin, and the Devil’s distinguished characteristic.” -WellinsCalcott
Since lying is a practice to deceive, injure, betray, rob, destroy, and the like, all men must agree that lying is one of the most scandalous sins that can be committed between men; a crime of a deep dye, and of an extensive nature, leading into countless sins; lying in this sense is the concealment of all other crimes, the sheep’s clothing upon the wolf’s back, the harlot’s blush, the hypocrite’s paint.
6. “A lie is a very short wick in a very small lamp. The oil of reputation is very soon sucked up. And just as soon as a man is known to lie, he is like a two-foot pump in a hundred-foot well. He cannot touch bottom at all.” -Henry Ward Beecher
A lie has a wick that is comparable in length to that of a little lamp. As soon as reputation oil is sucked in, it quickly evaporates. Man becomes as ineffectual as a two-foot pump in a hundred foot well when he is known to deceive. He can’t even get close to the ground. This quotation also asserts that once someone begins to lie, it becomes a habit, just as lying becomes a habit for everyone, and they believe it is okay to lie because it won’t really affect them or anybody else.
7. “Did their conceit not blind them, neither men nor women, who habitually invent lies or garble the truth, could hope to be long undetected; for people meet who know them, talk over these statements, and soon ferret out the naked truth; and a few exposures will render its perverters objects of suspicion for the remainder of their lives.” -Charles William Day
The quotes states that their arrogance had not blinded them, neither men nor women who frequently fabricate lies or muddle the truth could hope to remain undetected for very long. People who know them will meet, discuss these statements, and eventually ferret out the naked truth, and a few exposures will make its perverters targets of suspicion for the rest of their lives.
8. “People think that a liar gains a victory over the victim. What I’ve learned is that a lie is an act of self-abdication, because one surrenders their reality to the person to whom one lies, making that person one’s master, condemning oneself from then on to faking the sort of reality that person’s view requires to be faked.” -Ayn Rand
People believe that a liar triumphs over his or her victim. What I’ve discovered is that telling a lie is a form of self-abdication since it means giving up control of one’s reality to the other person, making them the lord of the situation and dooming oneself to fabricating the kind of reality that person’s point of view demands be done away with.
9. “The wickedness of lying consists in its perverting one of the greatest blessings of God, the use of speech; in making that a mischief to mankind which was intended for a benefit. Truth is the greatest bond of society. If one man lies, why may not another? And if there is no mutual trust, there is an end of all intercourse.” -W. Gilpin
Lying is sinful because it corrupts one of God’s greatest gifts to man, the ability to speak, turning what was meant to be a tool for good for all of humanity into a tool for evil. The strongest link in a society is the truth. Why can’t a second man lie if the first did. The termination of all sexual activity occurs if there is no mutual trust.
10. “We cannot teach children the danger of telling lies to men without realizing, on the man’s part, the danger of telling lies to children. A single untruth on the part of the master will destroy the results of his education.” -Jean Jacques Rousseau
According to this quote, without first making males aware of the risks involved in lying to children, we cannot adequately educate children the dangers of lying to men. The results of his education will be ruined by just one lie from the master.
11. “Lying is so ill a quality, and the mother of so many ill ones that spawn from it, and take shelter under it, that a child should be brought up in the greatest abhorrence of it imaginable. It should be always spoke of before him with the utmost detestation, as a quality so wholly inconsistent with the name and character of a gentleman, that no body of any credit can bear the imputation of a lie; a mark that is judged in utmost disgrace, which debases a man to the lowest degree of a shameful meanness, and ranks him with the most contemptible part of mankind and the abhorred rascality; and is not to be endured in any one who would converse with people of condition, or have any esteem or reputation in the world.” -John Locke
A child should be raised with the utmost hatred for lying. Since it is such a bad characteristic. And the source of so many other bad ones. That grow from it and find refuge under it. A mark that is judged in the highest disgrace. Which debases a man to the lowest degree of a shameful meanness. And ranks him with the most despicable part of humanity. The abhorred rascality.
It should always be spoken of before him. With the utmost contempt. It is a quality that is so wholly inconsistent. With the name and character of a gentleman. That no body of any credit can bear the imputation of a lie. It should not be put up with. By anyone who wants to interact with people. Of condition. Or maintain their reputation in the world.
12. “When it is an adventure to watch someone lie, when you know the truth! And yet you offer a smile! For now, they don’t hold the place they had earlier!”- Henry Kolge.
A person should be happy to get rid of such people from their lives. As they are of no value because it is useless. To keep people in your life who lie to you and also not accept the same, as is stated in the quotation about the time when you know someone is lying but you are aware of the truth and watching them lie is an experience, but rather than feeling sad you can still grin because now they don’t hold the same place in your life and heart as they did earlier.
