Danny Mack Gable, a former folkstyle and freestyle wrestler and coach, was born in the United States on October 25, 1948. Gable is a two-time NCAA Diion I national champion, a world gold medallist, and an Olympic gold medalist who is regarded as one of the best wrestlers of all time. He was only the third wrestler to ever be inducted into the Legend category of the United World Wrestling Hall of Fame. Gable received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from American President Donald Trump on December 8, 2020.
1. “Gold medals aren’t really made of gold. They’re made of sweat, determination, and a hard-to-find alloy called guts.”
The quote by Dan Gable suggests that gold medals won by people are not literally made of gold as they seem, but rather, they are made of sweat, determination, and guts that are very difficult to find in people. This quotation shows the value of gold since we can never buy gold; rather, we can only acquire it through hard work and sacrifice. Gold medals are difficult to obtain because they require a lot of effort and sacrifice.
2. “My mind’s never gone very far away from what I wanted to accomplish.”
According to this quotation, it means that if a person wants to achieve something in their life, they should never stray from their desire and they must also avoid being distracted from their goal because if a person’s mind is diverted, he or she will be unable to concentrate on their goal. One must therefore be alert and constantly motivated to achieve their goal in order to be successful in their particular field.
3. “There is always ways of motivating yourself to higher levels. Write about it, dream about it. But after that, turn it into an action. Don’t just dream.”
This quote means that one must constantly be motivated toward the goal they want to achieve in life. A person may be motivated in various ways, such as by writing about the goal, dreaming about the goal, or manifesting the goal. However, Dan Gable is saying that a person should not only engage in dreaming, as one must not only dream but also turn their dream into action, as acting in order to achieve the goal is the most important part to achieve success in life.
4. “When I’d get tired and want to stop, I’d wonder what my next opponent was doing. I’d wonder if he was still working out and visualized him. When I could see him working, I’d start pushing myself. When I could see him in the shower, I’d push myself a little harder.”
Dan Gable interprets this to mean that he considers how his next opponent could have behaved if he were exhausted and ready to give up. He speculates that the adversary could still be working out. He had often considered the opponent, and once he saw the opponent working, he would start to put more effort into himself. If he could see the rival in the shower, he would work even harder.
5. “I’m a big believer in starting with high standards and raising them. We make progress only when we push ourselves to a higher level. If we don’t progress, we slide into bad habits, laziness and poor attitude.”
Gable asserts in this quotation that he truly thinks that standards should be established at a high level and then raised since progress can only be made when we push ourselves to the limit. If we don’t move forward, we regress into bad habits, laziness, and a bad attitude, which also indicates, in his opinion, that we only succeed when we move forward.
Not when we move backward, such as developing bad habits, becoming lethargic, and also having a bad attitude. When it comes to what they want to do in life, a person’s attitude is really important. If they behave badly toward other people, especially those who are less fortunate, they may not be able to reach their goals since attitude counts and success only comes to those who work together.
6. “Raising your level of performance requires a proper mentality and meaning from inside. This gives you the ability and drive to work on the things necessary to go to a higher level in life. When people ask me how to raise their level of performance, the first thing I ask is that How important is it to you?”
Dan Gable claims that in order to function at a higher level, you must have a positive outlook and find significance within. This gives you the incentive and capability to work on the things necessary to go on to a higher level. The first thing he asks when someone asks him how to improve their performance is how important is it to you. This means that if something is important to a person, they will give it their all, which helps to improve their performance. Therefore, it is crucial for a person to estimate the goal’s value because how important it is for you to achieve it determines the level of performance.
7. “I vowed I would never let anyone destroy me again. I was going to work at it each day, so hard that I would be the toughest guy in the whole world. By the end of practice, I wanted to be physically tired, just to know that I’d been through a workout. If I wasn’t tired, I must have cheated somehow, so I stayed a little longer.”
Gabble states that he determined never to let anyone hurt me once more. Every day, he was going to put in so much effort that he would become the world’s toughest man. He wanted to be physically exhausted by the conclusion of practice so that he would know he had worked out. He also stayed a little longer because he must have cheated in some way if he wasn’t exhausted.
8. “You can’t ever work too much because there’s no such thing as being in a good condition. And You can’t ever lift too much weights because you can never get too strong. You can’t ever wrestle too much because you can always do better.”
There is no such thing as working too hard or being in too good of shape, according to Dan Gable, who also asserts this in this quotation. You can never lift too much weight because there is no such thing as too much strength. You can never wrestle enough since there is always space for growth.
9. “When I lifted weights, I didn’t lift just to maintain my muscle tone. I lifted to increase what I already had, to push to a new limit. Every time I worked, I was getting a little better. I kept moving that limit back again and again. Every time I walked out of the gym, I was a little better than when I walked inside.”
Gable says that he didn’t lift weights to merely keep my muscles toned while he did so. He pushed himself to a new limit by lifting to increase what he already had. He was improving a little bit with each job he had. That restriction was being shifted around repeatedly. Every time he left the gym, he felt a little bit better than when he had entered.
10. “Wrestling is the only sport I’ve ever competed in that puts you totally in a situation of constant motion without breaks. I could play football or baseball or swimming — but there’s always some kind of situation that would break my thoughts and break my concentration.”
He had only ever played wrestling, which is the only sport in which you are constantly in action. No matter what he was doing-swimming, playing football, or playing baseball-something would always distract me from what I was trying to concentrate on. He also wants to convey to people through this quote that if something is something they want to make a career out of, they should give it everything they have. Nothing should be able to break your focus while you are committed to it, just as he was committed to wrestling; he never got distracted while doing it, but he did get distracted while doing other things, which indicates that he did not give that support role his full attention and effort.
11. “Pain is nothing compared to what it feels like quitting. Give everything you got today as tomorrow may never come.”
This quote teaches us that one should never give up or quit as it is very painful and it is that pain that it cannot be compared to anything and stop thinking about the same rather than think about quitting, one must give their everything they got today and give their hundred person and never rely on future as tomorrow may never come, you will never know what will happen tomorrow, so it’s always good to give your best to everyday you’ve got.
12. “You may get tired. So what? We expect to be tired, but we expect to be able to continue until a match is over as well.”
This quote claims that anyone can become exhausted, but the author questions what that really means since we expect to be exhausted as well as to be able to play until the end of the game, which also implies that one must continue to fight until the very end. In the same way that we fight until the game is over, we also need to take care of the expectations that we have for ourselves.
